NEAR THE CROSS
Fanny J. Crosby
(1820-1915) William H. Doane (1868)
Jesus keep me near
the Cross;
There a precious
fountain.
Free to all a
healing stream,
Flows from Calvary’s
mountain.
In the
Cross, in the Cross,
Be my
glory ever;
Till my
raptured soul shall find
Rest
beyond the river.
Near the Cross, a
trembling soul,
Love and mercy found
me;
There the Bright and
Morning Star
Shed its bears
around me.
Near the Cross! O
Lamb of God,
Bring its scenes
before me;
Help me walk from
day to day,
With its shadow o’er
me.
Near the Cross I’ll
watch and wait,
Hoping, trusting
ever,
Till I reach the
golden strand
Just beyond the
river.
Author: Fanny J. Crosby, 1820-1915
The author of this song Fenny J.
Crosby was born blind. The
American poetess even at the age of eight had showed an extra
ordinary poetic talent. She has written more than 8000 gospel hymns.
Though she has written poems in a variety of subjects, her
favorite theme was Heaven and Lord’s Coming.
Her faith in God was unshakeable. Once a Scotch Minister remarked to her, “I think it is a great pity that the
Master, when He showered so many gifts upon you, did not give you
sight”. She quickly
replied, “Do you know that if at birth I had been able to make one
petition to my Creator, it would have been that I should be born
blind”. The clergyman
was surprised and asked her why?
She replied, “Because, when I get to heaven, the first face
that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior”.
Some of the other important hymns of
Fenny J. Crosby include “Blessed Assurance”, “My Savior First
of All”, “Saved by Grace”, “Rescue the Perishing”‘ and
“The Home Land Shore”.
Composer: William H. Doane, 1832-1915
William H Doane the composer of
this Hymn was born in Preston, Connecticut on February 3rd
1832. Though he was a Factory President, he was interested in
Music. He was one of
the leading gospel musicians of his time.
He wrote and published more than 2000 gospel songs and tunes. Doane was a personal friend of Fanny Crosby and collaborated
with her on many of her hymn texts.
